Ingredients
- black masoor (whole red lentils) 2 cups
- desi ghee (clarified butter) 2 tbsp
- cumin seeds 2 tsp
- 1 MEDIUM CHOPPED ONIONS
- 1 tbsp ginger, garlic & green chilli paste
- Tomato 1 finely chopped
- turmeric powder 1 tsp
- 1 tsp chilli powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- garam masala powder 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
- water as required
Directions
Masoor Dal Recipe is a simple recipe made in a pressure cooker with the most basic ingredients. The masoor dal is soaked for a couple of hour and then pressure cooked along with the ginger garlic onions and simple masalas.

Masoor dal is a very important part of vegetarian diet and is powerhouse of protein and rich in vitamin B1 and folic acid.
You can serve this whole masoor dal with roti, paratha, rice, quinoa or any other grain of choice.
Steps
1 Done | To begin making the Masoor Dal recipe, wash masoor dal well and soak for 3 to 4 hours. |
2 Done | Heat desi ghee in the pressure cooker over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow to crackle then add onions and fry until soft and translucent. Add ginger garlic and green chilli paste and saute on high heat for 2-3 minutes until aromatic. Do not brown. |
3 Done | Add chopped tomato and fry on high heat for a minutes until a little bit soft. Add chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and coriander powder and mix well. Keep cooking until the oil is released from the gravy. Add washed dal and saute on high heat for a minute. |
4 Done | Add enough water( about double the height of dal in the cooker) mix well. Bring it to boil, Cover the pressure cooker and cook for 3 to 4 whistles. After 3 to 4 whistles, turn the heat to low and simmer for another 5 minutes and then turn off the heat. Allow the pressure to release naturally. |
5 Done | Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and adjust the consistency of the dal with water as per the requirement. check for salt. put it back on the stove top and bring it to a boil. Then add garam masala powder and fresh coriander leaves and cook for 1-2 minutes. |
6 Done | Transfer the Masoor Dal to a serving bowl. |
7 Done | Masoor Dal is ready! Serve hot with roti, naan or boiled rice and some lemon and salt flavoured onions. |
